During a media briefing in Tirupati on Thursday, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, after inspecting the scene and interacting with officials, took decisive action. He suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramana Kumar, who opened the gate without prior announcement, leading to the stampede, and TTD’s Sri Venkateswara Gosamrakshanasala (Dairy Farm) Director K. Haranath Reddy, who was in charge of the token distribution centre.

Additionally, Naidu announced the transfer of TTD’s Joint Executive Officer (Health and Education) M. Gouthami, Chief Vigilance and Security Officer S. Sreedhar, and Superintendent of Police (Tirupati) L. Subbarayudu for failing to ensure proper coordination between the TTD and civil administration.

Naidu did not mince words, highlighting significant coordination failures among officials that led to the stampede. “More people thronging our Venkateswara temple is a good sign. The administration is also expected to brace itself for such an enhanced crowd situation to avoid such incidents,” he remarked.

The Bench reviewed the judgments delivered by former Justices S. Ravindra Bhat and Hima Kohli, as well as the concurring opinion of Justice Narasimha, and concluded that the views expressed were in accordance with the law. Consequently, the review petitions were dismissed.

The petitions had argued that the verdict forced queer couples to remain in the closet and lead dishonest lives. While the judgment acknowledged the discrimination faced by queer partners, it denied them judicial relief, leaving the matter to government policy and legislative action.
