"എല്ലാവർക്കും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട സിനിമയായിരുന്നു ' 96 '. ആ സിനിമയുടെ കഥ,തിരക്കഥ, സംഭാഷണങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ എല്ലാം വളരെ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം രാകി മിനുക്കി എടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വലിയൊരു ഹിറ്റ് നൽകിയ ആളെ ഇൻഡസ്ട്രി വിട്ടു വെക്കില്ല. പിറകെ ഓടി അടുത്ത പടം ചെയ്യിക്കും. എന്നാൽ അവസരങ്ങൾ തേടി വന്നിട്ടും പ്രേം കുമാർ ഉടനെ ഒരു സിനിമ ചെയ്തില്ല. പ്രശസ്തിക്ക് പിറകേ ഓടുന്ന ആളല്ല അദ്ദേഹം എന്ന് ഇതിൽ നിന്നു തന്നെ മനസിലാക്കാം. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ പക്കൽ ഇങ്ങനെ (മെയ്യാഴകൻ) കഥയുണ്ട് എന്നറിഞ്ഞ് ഞാൻ തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സമീപിച്ചതാണ്.
ഈ സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ എൻ്റെ കണ്ണുകൾ നിറഞ്ഞൊഴുകി. മിക്കവാറും കോവിഡ് കാലത്താവണം പ്രേം ഈ കഥ എഴുതിയത്. ജീവിതത്തിൽ എല്ലാവർക്കും ഒരു തേടൽ, അന്വേഷണം ഉണ്ടാവും. ഉത്സവ കാലത്ത് എല്ലാവരും ചെന്നൈയിൽ നിന്നും സ്വന്തം നാട്ടിലേക്ക് പോകും. അപ്പോൾ നഗരം തന്നെ ഒഴിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കും. അത്ര മാത്രം എല്ലാവരും സ്വന്തം നാടിനെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു. ഇതിൽ സ്വന്തം നാടു തന്നെയാണ് കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രം. ' കൈതി ' യിൽ അഭിനയിക്കുമ്പോൾ ആദ്യം മുതൽ അവസാനം വരെ രാത്രിയിലായിരുന്നു ഷൂട്ടിംഗ്. ലോകേഷ് കനകരാജ് ഫൈറ്റ് സീനുകൾ തന്ന് എൻ്റെ നടു ഒടിച്ചു. ആ സിനിമയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം മെയ്യഴകനിലാണ് അധികം ദിവസം രാത്രി ഷൂട്ടിംഗിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചത്. എന്നാൽ ഇതിൽ സ്റ്റണ്ട് സീൻ ഒന്ന് പോലും ഇല്ല എന്നതാണ് പ്രത്യേകത.
ഞാനും അരവിന്ദ സാമിയും അഭിനയിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ പരസ്പരം സംസാരിക്കവേ, ഇതിലെ രംഗങ്ങളിലെ വികാരങ്ങൾ ഒട്ടും കുറയാതെ അതേ പടി സ്ക്രീനിൽ കൊണ്ടു വന്നാൽ തന്നെ പടത്തിന് വലിയ വിജയം നേടിയെടുക്കാനാവും എന്ന് പറയുമായിരുന്നു. സിനിമ മുഴുവൻ അരവിന്ദസാമിയെ ' അത്താൻ, അത്താൻ ' എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് പിറകെ നടന്ന് ടോർച്ചർ ചെയ്യുന്ന കഥാപാത്രമാണ് എൻ്റേത്.
' 96 ' ലെ കാതലെ കാതലെ എന്ന പാട്ട് ഇന്നും മിക്കവരുടെയും. ഫോണിലെ റിംഗ് ടോണാണ്. അതു പോലെ മെയ്യഴകനിലെ പാട്ടുകളും കേട്ടു കൊണ്ടാണ് മിക്കവരുടെയും യാത്ര. ഈ സിനിമയിൽ കമലഹാസൻ സാർ പാടിയ ഒരു പാട്ട് വലിയ ജനപ്രീതി നേടിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു സിനിമയ്ക്കും വലിയ വാല്യു സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രത്യേകം നന്ദി അറിയിക്കുന്നു. ഇളയ രാജയുടെ പ്രണയം ഇല്ലാതെ പ്രേം കുമാർ കഥ എഴുതില്ല. മെയ്യഴകനിലും അത് സംഭവിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
